GPL Technologies Leverages Award-winning Visual Effects Studio, FuseFX's API stack

About FuseFX: FuseFX is an award-winning Visual Effects Studio providing visual effects services for television, feature films, commercials, and virtual productions. It was established in 2006 by Founder, David Altenau, and Co-Founders Tim Jacobsen and Jason Fotter, located in Burbank, CA.

Challenge:

FuseFX found their existing data storage solution limiting and wanted a truly unstructured data solution built for flash. Before working with GPL Technologies and Qumulo, FuseFX was previously automating their
VFX project structure creations with NFS (server file sharing) and SMB (file transfer) mounts on limited data broker servers. FuseFX had over 650TB of X410 storage, and they needed up to 200TB of storage for their new VFX simulation work and for their active archive data storage.

GPL’S SOLUTION:

In a team effort with GPL, and Qumulo’s Channel sales, Executive management, and product management team, we worked together to offer FuseFX a truly unstructured data solution.

“GPL is their [FuseFX’s] trusted advisor and was instrumental in helping us handle the objections and build confidence in our solution.” - Herman Muhlstein, Qumulo Territory Account Manager

“I feel that GPL really had our best interest at heart, and as a result, gave us the ability to draw an apples-to-apples comparison. “- Christopher Leslie, FuseFX Head of Technology

RESULTS:

Working with GPL and Qumulo allowed FuseFX to “look under the hood” of how large workloads were affecting their storage. This provided the ability to quickly modify FuxeFx’s workflow and optimize its storage platforms.

Now that they have a robust API stack, FuseFX leverages its data storage to make large swaths of folders, files, and projects without the need for broker servers and their active (or inactive) drive mounts. They are also building automated folder permissions based on projects to begin to employ the “least privileged” workflow. This will help satisfy the most stringent audit requirements without much user or admin intervention.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

In the media and entertainment industry, time is sometimes more valuable than money. In the past, it could take FuseFX 1-6 hours to synchronize their dataset with a cloud cluster and utilize cluster replication. Now with the solutions from GPL and Qumulo, this time has shrunk down to a mere 18.5 minutes.

Qumulo is one of GPL Technologies’ trusted data storage vendor partners. Qumulo is the breakthrough leader in simplifying unstructured file data management for high-performance workloads at an exabyte scale. Qumulo manages 200+ billion files, 64 billion files in a single production cluster, and a 20+ petabyte management capability with a single full-time employee.

“We are engineers at heart and love that they [Qumulo] brought ‘REAL’ engineers to the table to talk in-depth on how their tech works and how they feel it would benefit FuseFX.” - Christopher Leslie, FuseFX Head of Technology
